Help! My dog got sprayed by a skunk! If your dog or cat has been “skunked,” then you understand the relentless stench that just won’t go away. Although it is commonly believed that tomato juice is the best solution for a skunk smell, tomato juice will only mask the unpleasant smell. The key to removing a skunk smell from a dog or cat is to cause a chemical reaction that will neutralize the odor. This can easily be done with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
What Gets Rid of Skunk Smell on Dogs and Cats
Use the following formula to get rid of skunk smell on a dog or cat:
- 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
- ½ cup of baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of liquid soap
Before applying any solution to your pet, you should apply a small amount of Vetericyn Plus Eye Wash to his eyes to protect them from any solution that may accidentally get in them. After mixing all ingredients in a bucket, use the solution immediately as effectiveness will decrease with time. Massage the solution into your pet’s coat while wearing gloves. Be sure not to get any solution into your pet’s eyes, nose, or mouth. After leaving the solution on for three to five minutes, rinse your dog with lukewarm water and repeat as necessary.
Do not store the mixture because pressure will build up and the container will explode. Be aware that this formula may temporarily change your pet’s hair color.
What To Do If Your Dog Gets Sprayed By a Skunk
- If your pet brings the skunk smell into your home, try using an odor eliminating cleaner on carpets, fabrics, furniture, and in the air.
- If a skunk sprays your pet in the face, it may cause eye irritation and inflammation or redness of the mouth and throat. Flush your pet’s eyes with Vetericyn Eye Wash and rinse his face with fresh water.
- If your pet becomes nauseous to the smell, he may start retching or vomiting.
